I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Groupon (Chicago, IL) in Sep 2011
Interview
I applied for the Inside Sales position at Groupon and within a day I was contacted to set up a 10 minute phone call to run through my resume and hear about the position. Great!
When the recruiter called he asked if I was ok with the way the phone call would be handled: aka we talk about my resume a bit and then he tells me about the position and we will both see if it's a good fit/if we should move forward. I said that sounded fine isn't that how an interview normally goes?
He asked me why I was relocating and why I wanted to work for Groupon. I happily answered both questions as they are pretty standard. Then without any questions about my resume he told me that unfortunately I did not have the sales experience for this position and that I should come back in a year when I have had more direct experience in sales. He said he thought I would be a great fit if I had a year or so of the desired position.
Ok, fine. I understand not being qualified for a job, but my frustration is with the fact that I thought thats why they went over your resume in the first place? To see if you were qualified enough to speak to. I do have sales experience, albeit it's a couple of years fundraising, but that is exactly what it says on my resume. If I didn't have the appropriate amount of sales experience then why set up a phone call in the first place? And if you were calling to see if I had enough sales experience, why not ask me about my experience I have in sales?
I pushed a little further thinking maybe this was just their way of weeding out good sales people. I explained my sales experience and how I thought I was qualified and he said, while he agreed that I would be a good fit, there were red flags that would come from above because my resume doesn't say direct sales experience. Again, I ask...why did you set up a time to talk if that was the case?
Maybe they have a certain amount of candidates they have to reach out to in a month? Or maybe my answers to why I was changing cities and why I liked Groupon as a company were just flat out not what they were looking for...Either way, just thought it was odd.
I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Groupon (Chicago, IL) in Feb 2011
Interview
I was contacted by a recruiter for Groupon's sales department about having a phone interview. She asked me a few questions about why I was interested in sales and why I was interested in Groupon, and she seemed very enthusiastic about me. She invited me to come to Chicago for an in person interview the next week.
I drove to Chicago at 6:30am to meet with the recruiter who brought me to a conference room to quickly explain the position to me without really asking me many questions at all, except for "How would you explain what Groupon is to your grandmother?".
Next, after about a 20 minute wait, I met with one of the sales team supervisors who asked me a few more questions, and because I didn't have any real sales experience (recently graduated from college with BBA with a focus in marketing with 5+ years of retail/customer service experience), he asked me to explain to him why he should pick me for a job over people who were interviewing with between 5 and 10 years of experience.
I handled that question without blinking and moved on to another 20 minute wait before meeting with one final interviewer, a woman in her late 20's/early 30's who seemed entirely disinterested in hearing anything that I had to say. She was very dismissive during the entire interview.
I waited for another 20 minutes before meeting once more with the recruiter, who walked me out and asked if I had any more questions for her. I asked when I should expect to hear from her again (it was a Thursday), and she told me that she would get back with me at the very latest by the next Wednesday.
The next day, I wrote all three interviewers a thank-you letter and waited until Thursday without hearing from anybody to call back the recruiter. It is now Friday, and I have yet to hear anything from any of the interviewers via phone or e-mail.
All in all, not only did I spend about $100 on travel, parking, and food just to interview with them (they didn't offer any form of interview expense compensation), but their completely unprofessional manner of not contacting me after the interview in a timely manner has left quite a sour taste in my mouth.

Question 1
How would you explain Groupon to your grandmother?
The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Groupon (Chicago, IL) in Jul 2010
Interview
As a person looking for an escape from my current job, I applied to Groupon because I love their service as a consumer. I was called by their recruiter to take part in a phone interview which took about 10 minutes. I was asked to come in for an interview the following week to meet with "a few people" and told it would take about 90 minutes.
I told my current manager I'd be back in the office by 11am (travel time included), mind you my interview began at 9am and I didn't end up leaving Groupon until around 11am. The interview consisted of meeting with the recruiter I spoke with over the phone, he walked me through their operations and led me into their glass walled conference room over looking the sales floor. He & I spoke for a few minutes and I was told that I need to sound excited about selling Groupon to the next interviewers.
Recruiter guy leaves, HR guy comes in to talk with me and doesn't ask many questions about my qualifications. He barely glanced at my resume either. Instead I asked the questions I had prepared for the occasion. After about 20-30 minutes together, I'm told I don't seem excited enough about the position. HR guy leaves, grabs a sales manager to come speak with me and she shows up about 10 minutes later. She tells me more about the day-to-day activities of sales people, etc and it's mostly me asking questions again. She ends our meeting and tells me she'll grab the next person I'm to meet with. I sat waiting in the conference room alone for what felt like 30 minutes (didn't bring my phone or watch to check time). After a while the Recruiter returns and asks me if I needed to be anyplace, yeah work! And says let's chat tomorrow to see if we need to finish anything up.
I'm really unhappy at this point. As a sales person, my time is my money. If I'm not working I can't be closing sales. Any company should understand this, especially if you're potentially hiring someone away from their current employer. Needless to say I declined further exploring the opportunity, even if it is an awesome place to work.
Sincerely,
Not Excited Enough
