I was very excited to apply and potentially work for Inkitt, as I believed in their mission and thought their work was progressive and promising. The interview process, however, completely turned me off from every working at the company.
The recruiter (despite assuring me multiple times that they were very interested in me as a candidate) postponed our meeting 3x, once 5 minutes before the interview was to start, another time, 20 minutes before. (I had taken time off my current work for these meetings). Once I made it past the first round and was supposed to meet with one of the higher ups, they postponed the meeting again and changed who was to be interviewing me twice. Incredibly chaotic and confusing.
At the final interview, the interviewer was checking her phone while I was talking and did not even apologize or acknowledge it. It was incredibly disrespectful. At the time, I had an offer from another company and I had to give them a decision by the end of the week. I communicated this to the interviewer and asked if she could possibly give me an indication if I made it to the last round by the end of the week. She promised she would. After that, she disappeared, as did the recruiter. I emailed them 3x and finally got a rejection email a month later thanking me for my time.
It was a truly dehumanizing experience, especially because I had such high hopes for the company. This is not how you treat people who you interview and says a lot about how Inkitt values workers.

Tell me about your past copywriting experience
Typical STAR interview
I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Inkitt
Interview
- Submitted CV and received a response by email that I had been successful.
- Huge delay in the next steps, I waited months to hear from them again and had to email to chase them up.
- When I got a response they sent a task - to edit a chapter from one of their already published stories. Highly specific criteria for the notes and 3 day deadline. Left no room for creativity.
- Once this was completed, I received notes on my notes basically telling me to make the female protagonist weaker and not as headstrong. It seems that this is what they want for all their female lead characters, for them to be submissive and dominated by the male characters in the story.
- I was expected to edit the story again, after which I received the feedback that they would not be moving on with my application since "the way you have implemented the feedback around your cliff-hanger, which did not revolve around the characters themselves but relied on external action to push forward the narrative."
