I applied for a Lead Research position in Houston and successfully passed four interviews, including a technical assessment that required seven days of effort and the completion of four assignments. Throughout the process, I consistently received positive feedback specific to the lead role.
However, after about a month of silence, HR re-engaged, citing other internal priorities, and requested an additional interview. This final interview was with a potential future co-worker. Unfortunately, the interaction felt misaligned. The individual appeared to have a negative bias regarding my capabilities and results, asked overly basic questions that did not reflect the expectations for a lead-level role, and demonstrated a lack of professionalism by deflecting my questions back at me. This raised concerns about the team culture.
Following this, HR reaffirmed their interest in me joining the company but unexpectedly introduced the idea of a "specialist" role instead of the original lead position. Despite my dedication and interest in the company, I remained open-minded and agreed to a final interview with the Director to explore this possibility.
However, during the discussion, the Director assumed I was interviewing for a Senior Analyst role—despite no prior mention of this position. She proceeded to explain why I was no longer being considered for the lead role and shifted the conversation toward the analyst responsibilities. I clarified that I had agreed to the interview to assess the potential Specialist role, not an Analyst one, as it did not align with my experience, capacity, or career trajectory.
To further complicate matters, HR later returned without addressing the position details and instead lowered the previously discussed compensation range. This raised red flags regarding internal misalignment and a lack of clear communication between HR and the hiring manager.
Given the significant time investment I made—including a full week dedicated to technical assessments—it was disappointing to experience shifting expectations, unclear communication, and an apparent disregard for my time and expertise. This experience left me with serious concerns about the company’s internal culture and hiring practices.
