I applied online. I interviewed at PlayStation (San Francisco, CA) in Dec 2017
Interview
I interviewed 2 separate times for 2 different positions with Sony PlayStation at their San Francisco office. Once in Oct and then Dec. I applied online and had a phone interview. I was asked to come into their office to interview with 3 people. The toughest person to interview with was their Sony rep from Tokyo. The questions were very technical. I never had back and in Dec received a call to interview for a different position. I thought this was promising since I had already spoken to them and been to their location.
I went through the same routine again. I spoke with a manager over the phone, then was asked to interview in person again. This time with 6 different people. There was no job description and interviewed with different people who had no idea what the daily duties of the role would be. Again, the toughest questions were from 2 engineers one of them being a director from Japan. I thought the interviews went well. I eventually received an automated email saying I wasn't chosen after 2 weeks.

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at PlayStation
Interview
I've actually interviewed twice with Sony Interactive (Playstation). The first time was in 2013. It was all very professional and moved along at reasonable pace. They offered me a position and for better/worse I did not take it.
Flash forward to December 2017, I interviewed again for a similar position, thinking I would take it this time if offered. Got a half hour phone screen by an engineer. I feel I did well and apparently he did to, because he told me to expect the next step -- a take home exam delivered by email. I never received it. I contacted Sony directly and via the 3rd party recruiter several times, with no resolution. No one seemed to know what was going on. I chalked it up to being the holiday period. Finally after following up in January, the recruiter relayed a message that I didn't do well enough. No details. Look, I can handle rejection, but this just doesn't compute. The screener told me I did well. Why wouldn't you at least want me to take the take-home exam? Something went awry.
So I'm rating this a neutral - the average of my two experiences.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at PlayStation (Rancho Bernardo, CA) in Sep 2013
Interview
the y gave me a Data Scientist test since I hired on as a Sr. Data Scientist only to be told that title was not available in my group so they made me a Sr. Data Architect.
it was pure politics and ended up having a great albeit negative impact on my success there.
