      User Acquisition Manager Interview

      Jan 25, 2012
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Pocket Gems (San Francisco, CA) in May 2011

      Interview

Three interviews over the phone, total. First was with the director of growth, mostly fit questions. Second was with a product manager, which determined that I was not a good fit for the department, but instead perhaps a fit for the user acquisition role. Final interview was with the director of business, who went into my background, asked a case question about Apple, then asked a couple of brainteasers which ended up being about ability to understand prime numbers and probability. I didn't see the point of those. Each interview lasted 45 mins - 1 hour.

      Question 1

Imagine you have a prison that has 100 cells, all locked. Suppose the first guard goes through and unlocks every cell, the second guard goes through and changes the state of every other cell starting with #2 then the 3rd guard goes through and changes the state of every third cell begginging with #3, The fourth guard changes the state of every 4th locker starting with #4, Imagine that this continues until 100 guards have followed that pattern with the 100 cells.

      Question 2

You have two jars and hundred marbles. Fifty of the marbles are red, and fifty are blue. You must place all 100 marbles in the jars. You can decide how many and what marbles to be placed in each of the jars. Each jar can hold 100 marbles. One of the jars will be chosen at random; then 1 marble will be withdrawn from that jar at random. How do you maximize the chance that a red marble will be chosen? What is the chance of selecting a red marble when using your scheme?
