      Data Scientist Interview

      Sep 21, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Carlsbad, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Rockstar Games (Carlsbad, CA) in Mar 2020

      Interview

Took a 2-3 weeks. Went to a HR screen then a panel phone interview. The HR guy exuded a sort of SoCal party vibe like he was off a movie. Unless you are into gaming and that's your life, don't bother applying here. This is a frat type culture and I was told the culture is "work hard and play hard".. They probably play video games during a break. They do have real sports games as well but I was told but you are expected to love the video gaming culture. As you can expect that implies that most of the people that work here are young. I don't think you'd fit in if you are some 45 year old dude with a family. The HR guy asked me what games I played, I told them I played Nintendo back in the day. What I meant was when it first came out in 1988.. lol.. He had no clue what I was talking about! lol. I actually did make it to the tech phone screen round. I answered all their questions but they never got back to me. For the first few weeks, the HR guy just said, I haven't heard back from the panel yet. After I followed up after 3-4 weeks, I was finally told, after asking many times that I am not moving forward. I suspect if I hadn't followed up, they wouldn't have even bothered to contact me or tell me. I would not waste my time with this company if you are not under 35 and into gaming and gaming is your culture and way of life.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Rockstar Games (New York, NY) in Oct 2018

      Interview

I only had an HR Screen, but it was an absolutely bizarre experience. The HR person I was supposed to talk literally called me 20-30 minutes late at the end of the day. When I asked him literally any basic question about the role, (What projects are you guys taking on? What's on the roadmap? What are you guys looking for in a data scientist?) he was totally incapable of answering a single question and said that he would defer to the hiring manager on everything. Got a rejection later in a couple days. Like I said, totally bizarre.
