      Front End Developer Interview

      Apr 27, 2017
      Anonymous employee
      Toronto, ON
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON) in Apr 2017

      Interview

Looking at various other reviews you will probably realize that Shopify interviews aren't on the hard side, and from my experience that's true. However, that doesn't mean anybody can get in, it is just a different interviewing style. They don't have you sit down in front of a desk and start questioning you, handing you quiz and asking you to draw/code on a whiteboard. Instead, everything is a discussion and collaboration. This deviates from the traditional interview process of testing for algorithm/data structure/behaviour etc. Thus if you're good and competent at your craft, there's no need solving a gazillion code challenges online or look up the company value/history to hone your skills or craft your responses. On the other hand, interview consists of several rounds of talking, and lots and lots of talking with different people, with some white boarding and peer programming. Overall everyone I've met were extremely nice and there were no interrogative questions, mere friendly and constructive discussions. But the interview might feel very long given the amount of talking. All the talking will reveal your true self, how you are as a person and how you work as you normally work, not how you dress up to be and how you prepare to work for the interview. You can tell that despite the non-traditional interview styles, these guys are very careful with the people they're hiring. P.S. no one asked me to draw any owls.

Hey, That’s awesome, glad to hear you had a great experience and congrats on getting an offer! You’re exactly right about what we’re aiming to do with all those interviews. Although it does take some time, we believe it is important for us to figure out who people really are, and whether they have the specific qualities that will allow them to kill-it at Shopify. We find the interviews also give candidates a sense of what we’re about. In your case, it sounds like that’s what happened. Thanks again for taking the time to give a review!

      Interview

From start to finish they were very easy to communicate with. I feel like the interview process was easy, however I personally work in a language that was not offered as a coding option so I struggled a little bit to remember React and Node so I didn't get an offer.

      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Rockville, MD) in Feb 2022

      Interview

Application: - Recruiter reached out to me and applied after that Interview: The first process is an easy coding exercise and a life story. Then after that, the second round of the interview is 4 hours long where you do deep dive into what you worked on and 2 coding interviews. The coding interview was a relatively average question where you get to build a small web application for both of the coding interviews. My overall experience was ok.

      Front End Developer Interview

      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Shopify in Jan 2022

      Interview

First process is an easy coding exercise. In their recruitment page, they wanted the interviewee to think aloud to give the interviewer an idea of the applicant's thought process. Assuming that they value problem solving skills more than output. Even if you have the solution done (pseudo code/summary) but you haven't finished the implementation it would be an instant rejection. So I suggest to future applicants to just type in a straight forward console log output. Interviewer - was not engaged, and just talked when the time is up. No 5 minute warning. Was also not aware of the solution of the problem so they can't give you feedback when asked about the approach of your solution. Also talked about himself more than what a developer inside Shopify does.
