      Product Designer Interview

      Apr 1, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Montreal, QC
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Montreal, QC) in Feb 2020

      Interview

3 steps: Recruiter screen -> 2 hour life story/portfolio project -> onsite interview Overall a good interview process. The recruiter screen is mostly to learn about your experience and figure out what's going on at Shopify. In the lift story phase, you will be talking to your recruiter again about your career trajectory as well as parts of your personal life so that they can get a better feel for who you are as a person. This is a pretty general interview so if you want to prepare at all, perhaps write a couple paragraphs about what you think you've been doing with your life up to this point and read it over before the call. The portfolio project is also standard. You have an hour to present 1-2 projects. Be very detailed here about the problem you are solving, who it affects, why you made your decisions, what went well/didn't go well, and the results. The onsite is on the shorter side. You will do a 1hr whiteboard exercise with a senior designer on a generic problem. You definitely have enough time to come up with plausible solutions so be thorough in each phase of the exerciser (framing the problem, who it affects, the task flow, solution exploration). After this, you get lunch! Then you will have two interviews left for the day, one with a hiring manager, and one with designers to present your best portfolio projects. With the hiring manager, it is behavioral and focused on Shopify values. Read their values and come up with stories for how you demonstrate those traits in your past work. Be prepared to talk about conflicts working with your cross-functional teams. The portfolio presentation is similar to the previous part of the interview presentation. You'll make a deck and walk through your best projects. Once again, be detailed. Clearly describe your process, the problem, who is facing the problem, and every subsequent step of your solutions. Be prepared to talk about what went well and what didn't go well, what you would change, what unique things you struggled with while working on this problem.

Hey, there! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this out, and for coming into the office for your interview. Getting a taste of what the hiring process is like is hugely helpful for any other future candidates, as it lets them know what to expect. You've offered some great advice to fture candidates, and I'm glad to hear you found the process so thorough! Our hiring process can be lengthy as we aim to learn about our applicants in detail; we want to know more about you and encourage you to ask about us. Depending on the role, the hiring process can include not only life story sessions, but technical scenarios as well. Being a constant learner means we teach one another, share context, mistakes, and learnings; group discussions to outline ideas are so important in how we solve problems. I am sorry to hear there was no offer this time around, but I do hope you apply again in the future when you feel ready. Best of luck when that time comes again!

Straightforward, the recruiter was friendly and very informed about the role. Very transparent how the company runs and able to communicate expectations and next steps clearly. Questioning and flow was smooth, comfortable and very accommodating.

The first thing you’ll get is a recruiter screen which is fairly standard. After, you’ll progress to a portfolio review with craft person and a panel, and a hiring manager chat.

      Interview

It’s been almost a decade since I wrote about a candidate or job experience on glassdoor, but this was bad enough to share. I’ll spare folks the details and focus on the feedback. It’s one thing (and completely reasonable) for Shopify to have bumps in the recruiting process and still decide to not move forward with a candidate. It’s *another* thing to have a recruiting process SO sloppy that candidates walk away associating Shopify with red flags and stale, slow-to-ship designers. If emotional acumen isn’t part of your recruiting culture, then fine. You can still share pronouns in your introductions, diversify your interview panels, and ensure that ALL candidates get the same level of comms/prep at every stage of the recruiting process. Candidates shouldn’t have to answer biased interview questions and leave the experience feeling grateful that they DON’T work at your company. Shame on you, Shopify! It’s 2024... do better.
