      Recruiter Interview

      Oct 15, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Shopify

      Interview

It was a couple preliminary chats via call and video before the life story section. This is where things got very uncomfortable - being asked to share personal aspects of my life - that do not pose relevance to the role is grossly uncomfortable. Why does Shopify think it's appropriate to inquire about someone's upbringing and various personal information that they as an interviewer really should not be asking. This opens up to so much bias, why not spend the time to measure skills and experiences? Especially an issue when they have a large group of white people interviewing BIPOC folks, and judging their education/upbringing. I hope they understand the systemic issues present here.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to leave a review here, and for being so open and candid about your experience. Our Life Story sessions are designed to be conversational, we want to get to know you! It’s important for us to find out the ‘why’ behind what drives you, what makes you passionate about the problems we’re trying to solve, and how our values align together. We take a holistic approach when considering a candidate for a position, as we value you as the human you are! The question “Please tell me about yourself” is open-ended. This allows you to share candidly from any area of your life, so you're comfortable in what you’re sharing. You can take this time to share what you believe is the most important information for us to know! This open conversational-style discussion gives you the space to share your skills and experience from your unique point of view, and that’s what we’re most interested in. At Shopify, we believe the future includes more voices, in tech and entrepreneurship. Racial diversity is an organizational imperative here and we have launched several different initiatives to both increase diversity and foster a greater sense of belonging. We hire people who care deeply, who are here to do their life’s work. In return, we care just as deeply about their experiences, how we show up as an employer, and how we can best enable them to do that work. The points you’ve mentioned during your interview is valuable feedback for our team to take on board, I’ve passed this along to them now on your behalf. Thank you again for your review, it is greatly appreciated!

      Interview

Unconventional which seemed Ok at first. The place had a real cult of personality vibe to it. Everyone was nice, but I really did get the sense of a "we are holier than thou feeling".

      Recruiter Interview

      Sep 25, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Aug 2024

      Interview

The process was unnecessarily long, lacked direction and at times irrelevant. The technical test was essentially a 3 question test on excel functions. The life story was one of the strangest interviews I have been involved in. The recruiter came off as arrogant and disinterested. At times I felt like they were just gathering information on my previous employers. Judging by some of the comments on their company culture, I'm glad I dodged a bullet. Zero feedback received too which says it all about their culture.

      Application

The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Jul 2024

      Interview

The recruitment process I went through was quite interesting and involved several stages. First, I completed an online test that evaluated my behavioral and logical skills. After that, I had an online meeting with the recruiter. This was followed by another online session specifically designed to test my data skills. Then, there was a life story interview, and the last stage was a reverse life story interview. I received feedback within about 1.5 weeks.
