      Recruiter Interview

      Oct 16, 2014
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Toronto, ON
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON) in Oct 2014

      Interview

I applied to the job online through the Shopify careers area where you enter some atypical things like your twitter handle and the funniest thing you've seen online. The job description specified the specific dates that the first round of interviews would be held and how many people would make it to that round, which was really nice to know. The job description did not include specific experience requirements but did cover a brief overview of what a recruiter does. About 2 weeks later, only a few days before the first round of interview dates, I received an email that I was invited to select an interview time through a link. When I arrived at their offices, I made myself a nametag with the ipad at the reception desk. Very open concept office with apple computers, iphones, ipads everywhere. Everyone was very laid back and relaxed, wearing comfortable clothing - most people in jeans. The person I was meeting with took me to a meeting room for a 10 minute interview. The conversation was about my life story and very laid back. She did not have a copy of my resume and didn't want a copy. It was obvious she was looking for a certain personality and fit instead of experience. She was very interested in the structure of my current company. Questions that I found incredibly inappropriate and a potential discrimination case in human rights were "What highschool did you go to?" and "What year did you graduate university" (which was also on my resume had she had it) and "Did you go directly from highschool to university and how many years was your program". Clearly she could determine my age from that and possibly even my religion based on which school board I was in during highschool. Interview was 15 minutes at the most. Was grateful not to get a second interview (would've turned it down anyways) as I was uncomfortable with the questions asked and would not ask the same questions if I became their new recruiter.

      Question 1

Unexpected: What highschool did you go to? What year did you graduate university? Did you go directly from highschool to university and how many years was your program? - all potentially discriminatory, maybe she was testing my knowledge of discriminatory questions

      Interview

Unconventional which seemed Ok at first. The place had a real cult of personality vibe to it. Everyone was nice, but I really did get the sense of a "we are holier than thou feeling".

      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Aug 2024

      Interview

The process was unnecessarily long, lacked direction and at times irrelevant. The technical test was essentially a 3 question test on excel functions. The life story was one of the strangest interviews I have been involved in. The recruiter came off as arrogant and disinterested. At times I felt like they were just gathering information on my previous employers. Judging by some of the comments on their company culture, I'm glad I dodged a bullet. Zero feedback received too which says it all about their culture.

The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Jul 2024

      Interview

The recruitment process I went through was quite interesting and involved several stages. First, I completed an online test that evaluated my behavioral and logical skills. After that, I had an online meeting with the recruiter. This was followed by another online session specifically designed to test my data skills. Then, there was a life story interview, and the last stage was a reverse life story interview. I received feedback within about 1.5 weeks.
