The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON)
Interview
Shopify recruiters want you to go through 7 hours of interviewing before sharing salary information. 1 hour is a top grading interview they rebranded as "life story." These types of interviews tend to be biased and favour those with more traditional backgrounds, no resume gaps, and English and storytelling proficiency, and based on my experience, they have the side effect of making the candidate feel drained. I withdrew before getting to this stage so I'm not sure if their version of top grading is different.
I really enjoyed talking to the hiring managers and was excited about the projects, but the recruiter was shifty with her answers about salary. I withdrew from the process due to her obvious lack of respect for my time. She would say she wasn't comfortable sharing salary information. Well, I'm not comfortable interviewing for 7 hours if I don't know what the salary is. Given that other companies have less time commitment and are willing to share the budget for the role up front, I withdrew. Perhaps if I ever find myself unemployed and available for 7 hours I may pick up where I left off.
The company seems interesting as they're experts in the e-commerce space and probably have lots of complex technical challenges, but the recruiter requiring me to go through the whole interview process before giving a straight answer about salary is too shifty for my liking. I don't like how she made me feel like I was asking something unreasonable. She gave off vibes that she would not be enjoyable to negotiate with either if they didn't offer me what I would be willing to take.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Dec 2021
Interview
I applied through referral. Got an initial contact by recruiter a day after application via email to schedule for coding screen which was very trivial. The question itself will likely involve some array traversal and use of a map. Other than that just remember to write tests.
A couple days after the coding screen the recruiter followed up to do the life story. I am not a talkative person naturally during interviews I do become a bit more hyper at the same time I was being sincere in talking through my life progression and so the interview felt good. At the end of the interview the recruiter expressed she'd move me to the next round and I got confirmation by EOD to schedule for the pair programming and deep dive.
The pair programming sessions were still pretty easy which involved basic OO programming and testing. The questions were basically what others had shared on glassdoor, the interviewers were helpful when I got stuck.
The technical deep dive I did not prepare too well for and kept getting lost in my train of thought while doing too much explaining. Perhaps it would've been better if I had prepared a slideshow for it. But at the end I still got a good news email (no downlevel) a couple days after.
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Feb 2021
Interview
Throughout the entire process, I was impressed. I started with a 30 minute live coding exercise - the interviewer was polite and answered my questions thoroughly. From there, I had a Life Story interview with a recruiter who did a fantastic job of outlining why I should work at Shopify. Finally, the last step was a three-part interview of two pair programming sessions and a technical deep dive. Everyone I spoke to was kind and extremely passionate about what they do! I loved the interview process and love working here.
