I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Shopify (Irvine, CA) in Aug 2021
Interview
1 hour coding followed with 1 hour HR then they will say there’s no team that matches you.
They should have done team match screening first!Don’t waste your time with them!!
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (New York, NY) in Aug 2021
Interview
1 hour technical screen, 1 hour life story.
The tech screen took 15 minutes - it was a super easy question that I solved quickly. I then progressed to the life story, which is an interview with a recruiter where you basically talk about your experience and how you’ve arrived where you are. I thought the conversation went super well - had a great rapport with the recruiter and we easily could have gone for over an hour.
Three days later I get a generic rejection email. No idea why, considering I thought I hadn’t put a foot wrong (and I’ll happily admit when I don’t think I’ve done well). I think the life story is a way to weed people out based on whatever arbitrary criteria they have. That’s said, they shouldn’t waste my time and emotional energy - if there’s something about my profile you don’t like just don’t give me an interview.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Sort a list of products based on name and quantity sold. Break ties on product price.
The hiring process was smooth overall.
Classic Shopify interview:
- Coding assessment
- Life Story
- 2 x pair programming
- 1 x design presentation
I didn’t receive an offer because I lack experience. When I asked for feedback I got a generic answer with no path for improvements. So I wasted around 6 hours and I don’t event know what went wrong exactly / on which criteria I was judged.
