Interview
First step was an email to set up a 10 minute Phone Interview, after that I was scheduled a 45 minute Skype interview with the talent coordinator, then another 45 minute Skype interview with a team leader then 3 x 45 minute in-person interviews with a Dept Head, team member and team leader.

Interview
According to the interviewer who spoke to me, the interview process at Shopify is more about getting to know you as a person and about the experiences that led to the present point in your career path. This was certainly consistent with my interview. I wasn't given any of the usual, "skill testing" questions, like "How do you plan a document?" or "Can you give me step-by-step instruction on how to make a peanut butter sandwich?" Rather, the questions focused more on how I like to work within a team.
This struck me as a sensible approach, given that the interviewer was from HR and not someone in my field. In my experience, hiring based only on skills (or claimed skills) and not on "fit" can create systemic dysfunction within a company. This is particularly dire for a technical writer, for whom the willingness of the in-house subject matter experts to communicate is critical.
