Went through two rounds of interviews. The manager interviewed me first and then the general manager interviewed me. They were very friendly and asked my experiences to see how well they translated to retail because I’ve never had a retail job before.

Question 1
Tell me about a time you managed multiple task? How did you prioritize which task was completed?
I initially had a decent interview and was hired on the spot. However, when it came time to complete onboarding paperwork (such as tax forms), I was 19 and unfamiliar with some of the questions—particularly those related to taxes. I asked for clarification, and instead of offering support, the interviewer snapped at me, yelling, “READ WHAT IT SAYS,” even though I had already read it and was genuinely trying to understand.
The job posting had originally listed the pay as $15/hour, but I was offered $11.15/hour. When I politely asked if there was any potential for a raise in the future (even after a year ) she appeared offended and completely dismissed the question. The condescending tone and belittling responses to my questions left me with a sinking feeling. Although I didn’t have much job experience at the time, I knew something about the situation didn’t feel right.
While I was technically hired, I chose not to return for my first day. When the manager called to ask why I hadn’t shown up, her tone was incredibly condescending. I told her honestly that she was the reason, I had seen everything I needed to from that one interaction. I explained that I left the interview with a strong feeling that the workplace environment wasn’t healthy or supportive. I had heard similar concerns about the culture at Ulta, and my experience confirmed those concerns.
I'm sharing this to offer insight into how candidates experience interviews and to encourage more self-awareness and accountability from those in hiring roles. First impressions matter, especially when you’re shaping the culture of your team and your actions speak volumes about the kind of manager and leader you are.
