      Interview

A disappointing experience considering the size and reputation of the company. The first stage was a short 15 minute call with an in-house recruiter who was welcoming and approachable. The second stage was a recorded video interview process which took between 30-40 minutes. It was not difficult, but it would have been helpful to have contact time with the hiring manager before this stage as I had clarifying questions about the role which should have been answered at that point. The third stage was a competency interview with 3 interviewers. Standard questions were asked, with a request to provide relevant real-life examples. The flow of the interview was poor, and the interviewers appeared to not know who was asking what, which lead to long pauses after answers. Two of the interviewers were personable, the third (the people leader) presented as disinterested and appeared to be working during the interview. Communication post-interview was poor. Feedback was promised to be shared before two separate deadlines and it never materialised despite chasing. After almost 4 weeks post-interview with no feedback, I wrote to withdraw my application for the role. My experience suggests that bp does not focus on treating candidates professionally, and that my preparation and participation in the interviews was not appreciated. I have come out of the process feeling that my time was disrespected. Ultimately I believe there was already a preferred candidate chosen and my interview process was therefore a tick box exercise. This would explain the lack of professionalism and disinterest that I experienced from bp. I would caution future applicants to be aware of these red flags and to always advocate for yourself to ensure you are respected at all times during the process.
