Pros

Good compensation package, no state tax in Washington. Competitive with Google and Microsoft. A lot of exciting teams to work on, which was surprising, especially to those that view Amazon as a "bookstore." Teams are usually small, divided into two pizza teams, meaning that each team can be fed by two pizza. This is nice.

Cons

Employees don't get their own offices, which can sometimes make it hard to program. But of course, this is the case at most programming companies, so it's not really Amazon specific. They have no offices in California, so you pretty much have to move to Seattle.

Pros

Opportunity to work on many different projects, smart people in general. Genuinely oriented towards customers.

Cons

Constant, time-wasting micro-management. Absurd attention to tiny details by the most senior managers and VPs, and certainly by Bezos himself. Often a sense of wasted effort when some VP's whim changes. A very decentralized organization, which can make things very political--often the loudest jerk wins the argument.

Pros

The company has a very clear vision. If you are sufficiently extraverted and political, opportunities for advancement can be good.

Cons

The environment is very political. Although one of the company core competencies is "not optimizing for optics", the company is infested with brutal politics and appearances are more important than actual performance. This is partly a result of the darwinian management style (10% of employees are managed out every year as part of the performance process, and can end up getting the message throughout the year that they did a good job, and suddenly they are being managed out) Communication, both between groups and up and down the management chain is terrible. The company is incredibly secretive. Pressure to work long hours in this environment is incredible.
