The managers were horrible people. They constantly commented on how I looked and laughed at me and commented on my mannerisms. They told me that I was not capable of working and would never be able to work a job properly in my life. This was my first job and I was quite naive at the time so I did not understand that managers cannot say these things, and hearing these things said about me definitely affected me for a while. I have worked many years in better retail jobs since, have changed nothing about the way I work and have got nothing but praise from managers so looking back on it I was clearly just getting bullied by the managers. Commenting on a young girl’s looks and telling her she will never be capable of doing a job properly is absolutely horrible. Other than this, they would give people 30 hours one week and 6 hours the next. So if you’re looking for a reliable income this is not it. I worked there for 8 months and I called in sick once. When I called in sick the manager made me sign a statement she wrote out and gave me a warning. I called in sick once. Literally only that time. That was the only day out of 8 months that I didn’t go in to work, and I got a warning for it. A customer sent an email to the shop praising two workers from the concession that I worked in saying they provided excellent service . I knew that it was me and another female coworker as the customer described us and the interaction clearly. However, because the management did not want to give me and the other girl credit, they blacked out the names mentioned in the email when they hung it up on the doors for employees to see so nobody knew who it was about. Also, they would put one person on close and this person would be only paid for half an hour after the concession closing time. This means the one person had to drain the counter, scrub rice cookers, trays with beans dried into it. Put all the food into boxes and label it, take temperatures, wait to cool, retake temperatures until cool enough. Count the whole till and do a drop. Empty the bins, sweep, mop. All in half an hour. It was literally impossible, you would always go over time. So much unpaid work was done because of this. There is also no discount at all for staff.
