Pros

Diverse work force with many different backgrounds. Each day was different which keeps the days from getting stale.

Cons

Applegreen requires an unusually high & often unreasonable level of commitment from salaried managers. Managers are routinely expected to work well beyond 50 hours per week and remain available seven days a week between 6am–11pm, regardless of business volume. These expectations are not occasional; they are unfairly built into Applegreen's standard operating model for managers and site Directors. The workload and availability requirements are not sustainable and are the primary driver of the company’s severe turnover rate. Most employees leave within six months making it difficult to have any type of foundation. Because of the constant turnover, critical support departments including IT, Finance, Facilities/Maintenance, HR, and Operations are persistently understaffed and undertrained. This lack of infrastructure significantly impacts daily operations. Basic tasks become unnecessarily complex and delayed. The organization depends on more than 15 different systems and applications, many of which are outdated, poorly integrated, or unreliable. System errors and data errors regularly create avoidable operational issues, forcing managers to spend excessive time investigating and correcting problems that come from system failures rather than actual site performance. Working conditions across Applegreen locations are consistently poor. Morale is consistently low, and the culture feels reactive and pressure-driven rather than supportive or solutions-focused. Chronic understaffing frequently forces teams to operate under pressure, increasing burnout and raising operational and food safety risks. Due to Applegreen policy, it is difficult to terminate underperforming employees and sites become a harbor filled with poor staff who negatively affect hard working employees. Labor hours are reduced aggressively and are unpredictable with often weekly or even daily changes being forced on employees. This leaves sites/brands operating with skeleton crews, well below food safety recommendations. Employees are also regularly expected to cover business needs with personal funds, while reimbursement processes are slow and difficult, sometimes taking months for minor amounts. There is a noticeable lack of consistent leadership, operational structure, and long-term planning. Decision making is heavily centered on short-term cost reduction rather than sustainable performance or employee stability. Corporate decisions often undermine service quality and employee retention and show no value towards guests. I often tried to influence positive change but was never heard above the regional director. Most concerning is the gap between Applegreen's stated core values and the true experiences inside the company. Values are emphasized in emails and the handbook but are NOT consistently demonstrated through policy, staffing models, or leadership behavior. Labor management practices in particular show limited regard for employee well-being, site needs, or even service standards. For applicants looking to join Applegreen, please approach with caution. Carefully evaluate whether you are prepared for excessive workloads in a dysfunctional and routinely toxic environment that Applegreen creates. There will be high levels of micromanaging, limited operational support, and a culture where "stated" values and actual practices are frequently misaligned. Do not just take my word on Applegreen. Ask the recruiter or hiring manager if you can have an honest conversation with an employee in the role you are applying for prior to making your decision. I am sure their response and my review will be consistent.
