The U.S. steel industry is facing a critical workforce challenge: thousands of skilled workers are needed over the next decade to fill vacancies left by retirements. An aging, skilled workforce in the manufacturing industry creates an acute current and anticipated need for skilled workers with strong technical and engineering training. Together, the baby boomer generation approaching retirement, a restructuring economy and rapidly advancing technology have created an increased demand for individuals to enter the United States workforce with higher skills in science, technology and math skills. Consequently, it has become imperative for business and education to partner and build a highly skilled, highly trained technical workforce to support the broader manufacturing economy.
