Pros

I really can't think of any! It was the complete wrong turn for my career. Long hours and low pay. I gues the most positive this i can say is that I finally got laid off.

Cons

Managing a union environment with management that was afraid to stand up to the union. Upper management is completely out of tough with the front line managers therefore consistantly make the wrong decsions. They treat front line managers like trash by constantly threatening their jobs. Many managers are working 16-17 hour days, six days a week. Not to mention stealing 4 week vaction from me and not compensating me or any one of the managers that lost it. Another huge disadvantage was the couriers were IC's. So you had no direct control over them. That means simply that DHL has no control to ensure quality to it's customers.

Pros

There are so many people from every corner of the earth, one really gets the opportunity to expand one's cultural horizons. It is really a great place to learn how to manage across cultures. DHL has strong cultural roots that have been neglected for many years, but every once in awhile, one can see them coming out. When old colleagues get together, the stories that are heard remind all of the "good old days" when DHL was a rough and tumble, entrepreneurial outfit, setting out to conquer the world. The opportunities to work around the world are really impressive, especially if one can gain some specific expertise in funtional roles. There is a DHL in virtually every corner of the globe. This implies that if one really desires, a job can be found anywhere.

Cons

It is discouraging to constantly be managed by powerpoint slide. In many cases, this serves as a poor substitute for two things: Proper investigation and research of an idea, and communication of this idea to others. The powerpoint slides become mountains of data which are way too complicated to be navigated in the short meetings we are attending. All of that, and its still possible that the real ideas one is trying to communicate just aren't being heard. Powerpoint isn't the best way to communicate. In some cases, it seems that the company is "all chiefs and no indians." I think most of the time employees who are doing the work have the right ideas, but these just don't get through to senior management. The middle managers of the company are real blockers of good ideas and stifle our potential.

Pros

DHL's compensation plan, work-life balance, and quality employees.

Cons

The communication factor--during tough times they do not explain what they are going to do to make change. Rather they make radical changes that effects everyones careers.
