Great work/life balance dwarfed by big mouths and bigger egos - Senior Associate Engineer Capital One Employee Review

Pros

Work/life balance is the best I've ever had. Deadlines are generally pretty lenient as well.

Cons

The annual review process uses stack racking: which I think is the root cause of one of the most passively toxic work cultures I've been a part of. Teams put forward a great front of working together to solve problems, but once the review cycle hits it all boils down to how much your manager likes you as a person. Innovative engineering and extra effort spanning the whole year takes a back seat to how much you've stroked your upper management's ego over the year. I've seen fantastic engineers get poor ratings due to not flashing their accomplishments while subpar engineers get promotions from knowing how to run their mouths about doing the most trivial tasks to seem impressive to management. Overall it's an incredibly stressful environment for employees who care about improvement rather than boot-licking.

Pros

Note- last year there was 2018, would not allow that option. Employee engagement always high priority.

Cons

Note- last year there was 2018, would not allow that option. Highly focused on sales vs service.

Pros

Some of the smartest individuals in their fields. The focus is always “forward” and the company is willing to adopt new tech to stay ahead for the purposes of the company’s (key word there) benefit. Great PTO and benefits.

Cons

The company’s drive to keep itself moving forward has caused it to regress in other aspects. As a leading tech company first, and leading bank second, it’s embarrassing what their stance is on hybrid and remote work. The company can easily accommodate remote options for their employees not near main offices, but chooses not to. I am relocating to a major city with no major CapOne presence and their response was “too bad, either fly up weekly or you’ll be terminated for not meeting the hybrid requirements”. It’s embarrassing because most of my week is remote anyways. I wonder how many current and past employees have been impacted, and I’m worried about how much talent they’ll be pushing away in the coming years.
