pawn of the executive - Anonymous employee PLOS Employee Review

Pros

people who are dedicated to furthering science and knowledge and the open access movement are a big plus for PLoS. There are many PhD's and other 'brainiacs' who live and breathe happiness into research. The 'management package' isn't bad with 3 weeks of vacation and they allow working from home when needed. They're understanding with family issues and modified hours.

Cons

Without a middle ground, executive level management is either completely hands off and not available or intense micro-managers. There is no in between. Fighting publicly between IT, Finance, and other editorial departments puts middle management and workers pitted against each other. Tempers are rampant and uncontrolled at the top. Entry level workers can barely afford food, while executive levels find ways in which to deny raises and bonuses.
