Pros

Working at Shopify from 2015-2019 was incredible. There was a lot of room for growth with great pay and the ability to work remote.

Cons

Post 2020, the company felt incredibly corporate. What was once a startup culture based on mutual respect and responsibility turned into a lot of closed door politics. After the mass layoffs in 2022/2023 the culture changed significantly. Communication across teams became secretive as everyone was afraid of protecting their work or losing their job. Many long term, higher performing employees were laid off because of how it was handled with an algorithm - simply because they were in roles that were either "duplicate" on paper or that management had over hired for when times were good and they were ambitious about growth.

Pros

Remote first culture. If you want freedom of location and a company to truly mean and support it - this is the place.

Cons

Constant change. Nothing to hold on to in this role, compensation, KPI's, tools all change every quarter.

Pros

High comp and AI forward. One of the few remote places left.

Cons

Upper management basically openly disdains the “working class”, and it’s a major jostle among the VP and Director level for currying favor with the CEO. The investment in AI tooling is smart but also the C suite majorly suffers from AI psychosis, it’s embarrassing, actually.
