Pros

Cons

I started here about 4 months ago and was surprised how quickly things went downhill. Being so excited to work here and be able to help business's was great. Now the types of deal structures we are forced to do is not in the best interest of the business's. Yes it will bring in more profit for groupon and they are better "deals" for the consumer who is buying, however, if it is not good for the business's then its just not good. We have to structure deeper discounted offers and have multiple offers within an offer and that means LESS money to the business, they can't sustain the discounts. I used to get upset when business's say they didnt like groupon and it doesn't work. Well now I am starting to agree with them. Groupon clearly puts their positive sales spin on it to make them think its good but it doesn't sit well in my stomach. I ( we) reps have no control anymore on working with the business's to find the best offer. We have to do what our managers want to do and structure it to make groupon more money. This is not a fun place to be and even being in the field you are still micromanaged. Weekly calls with managers are now daily and even 2-3 times a day. Quotas and Commissions. I am less than 4 months and I have the same quota as other reps that have been in my territory for over a year. They clearly have been doing this longer have more accounts and experience selling this service than us new ones. I have never seen a company that takes a team quota and divide it the way they do. Its the lazy man's way to value performance. Motivation and morale is at an all time low. Maybe if Groupon spent more time appreciating and paying people for how hard they work they won't have such huge turnover. Don't they realize it cost more to interview, hire, train and ramp up new people? If you give realistic quota's and pay well you keep the good people. Instead of having them jump ship - get your life preserver your going to need it if you work here.

Pros

-Decent benefits -Fun coworkers -Quirky CEO -Free beverages -Catered lunchs

Cons

Upper management is a joke. They have no experience in managing more then a checkbook, and have been promoted based on the speed of growth of the company, and "Talk time" from when they telemarketed for their region. The company does not adhere to nor recognize expertise and experience, yet instead embraces unnecessary and wasteful changes that do nothing but upset the businesses they represent, and throw company money away. This is no longer an Andrew Mason vision, yet a company going public grasping at straws to get an edge on the competition, and doing it very poorly. If you have so much as managed a Circle K, this job is beneath you. This is an entry level job at best. However if you have no family, no expenses, and just graduated college and have a desire to be a telemarketer alongside good-looking people...this job is for you!

Pros

Above-average compensation in sales Some interesting benefits (such as no dress code or PTO policy) Product is extremely popular and in many ways sells itself Opportunity to work for an industry in its infancy and define standards Media darling company is most likely a great resume-builder Great for entry-levels

Cons

It's unfortunate that an organization that prides itself on having a unique culture offers so little in the way of recognition/ professional development/ opportunity for advancement. Promotions are seemingly doled out based on tenure rather than merit. True, this is still a start-up company in a *rapid* growth mode; however, a little pat on the back and some stimulating ongoing training would go a long way for this employee. Any sort of encouraging remark from upper management is accompanied by a reminder that the work is constantly going to increase in volume and difficulty (in case you thought you could stop working for a split-second to reflect, go pee, or eat lunch). Lack of PTO policy seems like a lot of fun at first, but ensuing feelings of guilt for taking a vacation or sick day completely overshadow the novelty. The hours are insane, and there is an unspoken expectation that employees will always be reachable, making it difficult to disconnect and relax. No 401k matching.
