Pros

Optum is full of incredibly smart, driven, and capable people. During my time there, I had the opportunity to work with teams that were collaborative and truly committed to making a difference in healthcare. The scale of impact you can have is significant, and there are good resources and tools available depending on your role.

Cons

Unfortunately, the culture can be significantly undermined by poor leadership and an increasing focus on cost-cutting over people. After years of high performance and strong contributions to my previous team, I ended up under a new manager who failed to provide clear expectations, regular feedback, or any meaningful support. Without warning, I received a poor performance rating and was soon after informed that my position was being eliminated. Despite my track record, this effectively blocked me from transferring within the company and left me without a path forward. The experience was demoralizing and poorly handled, with zero accountability from management.

Pros

Optum pays above average salary and has great benefits. There is an opportunity to work in various areas of the enterprise as Optum Serve is a subsidiary of United Healthcare. The knowledge and experience that can be gained from working for a Fortune 5 company is limitless.

Cons

The amount of discrimination and retaliation is alarming. Senior Executives become threatened by top earning execs and find ways to dismantle business units. Employees are laid off because they witness discrimination and become a liability to the company. The threat of a possible law suit causes trepidation due to the many law suits that Optum faces due to their unfair treatment of minority employees. Leaders or those in charge which is a better description are able to retaliate against employees if they file a HR complaint without consequences. The toxicity within Optum Serve needs to be extracted like a rotten tooth. Then and only then would OS become a good place to work.

Pros

work from home or remotely

Cons

dysfunctional IT systems, micromanaging, no pay for beginning or ending of shifts, always understaffed, high turnover, if you work a queue based position you will not leave your computer for 10 hours a day, crisis calls without enough resources from people from all over the country, incredibly unrealistic metrics creating constant turn over and poor moral
