Pros

The pay is nice I guess.

Cons

This company does not give one rats butt about you. I am a college student and when I was recruited by this company, I told the recruiter that I cannot do 40 hours as I have school. They said no worries we can work with your schedule. Come time to set schedules (which was three weeks into training) they let me know that I am required to do 40 hours. I was required to either quit or do 4 10 hour shifts. And well I’m a student so I needed the money. About 2 weeks in, management lets me know that I am now required to stay an extra hour of over time for the next two weeks as it is “peak season”. I take 60 calls a day that is not peak season. Then I am now required to do 2 hours of overtime in the new year. No one cares. It’s required after all. No ifs or butts. I was hired on for the agreed amount of 36 hours, not god dang 48 hours. The upper management also all has a customer service voice that they even use on the employees. Because again. No one cares.

Pros

The acquisition of Change Healthcare is exciting but also brings restructuring. The company has lots of growth backed by UHC and leads several other companies in terms of technology focused service lines including FHIR APIs.

Cons

The company is always eat or be eaten. The culture is one that lacks true collaboration and often those looking for attention speak on things that have no or limited knowledge about to gain favor.

Pros

I have run into so many leaders at Optum who value your humanity and I've tried to replicate that when I led teams as well. It's contagious. It is filled with really brilliant and hard-working people. The majority of the people I worked with were passionate about our members and clients. They genuinely embrace DEI initiatives. Of all the companies I've been with, I've felt the most authentic at Optum.

Cons

Sometimes they have staff drive some of the DEI initiatives - which is great; however, we have expectations to get a lot done. So some of the chair people are not held as accountable for the actual work since they are on these committees. I ran into only one Senior Leader who I felt was one of the worst leaders I've ever encountered at Optum. He was so bad, I was shocked that he was in his position because I had met so many capable and inspiring leaders in the past. It was his lack of direction, constantly changing priorities, and inability to provide any semblance of clarity that caused me to leave. I still have some resentment because i wished to stay at optum for the long-term and he prevented that.
