Recovering From Leadership Vacuum

Pros

Smart, fun, Mission-driven people doing good things to open up access to research. Great location (near the Exploratorium). New management as of 2018 seems to be making the right decisions.

Cons

Fast growth led to some bad decisions from 2014-2017. Instead of focusing on author services, the company wasted millions on software development for a program that was recently (and finally) shut down. Competitors have taken back healthy hunks of market share so there's some serious belt-tightening going on.

Pros

Great people, good flexibility with work from home policy, great work-life balance. Awesome mission!

Cons

Organisational objectives need to be more clearly defined and accountability for projects has been lacking in the past. This may change with the new CEO.

Overall a good place to work

Pros

- Entry level jobs for graduates of all backgrounds - Opportunities available for those who work to forge a path there - Colleagues with varied and different backgrounds in arts, sciences, and tech - Mission led, which is fulfilling if you care about OA/open science

Cons

- Lots of middle management which can be stifling rather than encouraging - everybody competitively wants sign off so projects die - No obvious career path on publishing side, as structure is a pyramid from a low level (although there are opportunities to move departments as I did) - Some kinda weird decisions from the top over the last 3 years
