Nice place to work

Pros

- Busy atmosphere with smart, friendly staff who seem to genuinely enjoy each others' company. - Pay competitive for publishing or nonprofit. - Strong founding mission and values. - Opportunities to learn / get involved in different projects and initiatives. Works best for people who like to multi-task, problem solve, and are very flexible.

Cons

Suffers from some of the growing pains listed in other reviews: high turn over, unclear communication, shifting projects and priorities. Most likely not a good fit for those who prefer structure, clear instructions, consistency in tasks and responsibilities.

Pros

Some good young people working hard, most the in house editors and a decent managers The mission and goals

Cons

some things have changed since I left but a bunch of people still there say its no different: the work environment is toxic lot of upper level people do next to nothing and wage petty wars no vision or active steps to get there from the top down publish a ton of garbage which is ok i guess, but makes the org less desirable for real research papers product team is joke any upper level person with a brain left for greener pastures

many of the other negative reviews are correct

Pros

Good health benefits and retirement savings plan. Good work life balance in some departments, where people take their vacations and have their weekends free. Good for career changers or those early in their career in specific types of roles; substantive skills can be built here.

Cons

Salaries are below market rate in some departments. Projects are initiated and then abandoned, with no retrospective or open communication about how to improve next time. Planning ahead for major cross-functional projects is given lip service. Politics are sometimes given precedence over actually getting substantive work accomplished. Employees are periodically let go while many others choose to leave. The turnover rate is high.
