New CEO and organization's problems are worse than ever!

Pros

Benefits: 401K matching, many different health plans to choose from, bonus program Mission: employees come to PLOS to support the mission - accelerate scientific research, promote open access and open science, etc. PLOS is considered "one of the good guys" in scientific publishing compared to it's competitors

Cons

Management: I am/was a manager at PLOS and the politics get in the way of any progress. Product and Editorial teams drive the organizational priorities but do not deliver on their commitments. You cannot express your opinion without fear of retribution from senior management. Teams that have consistently delivered on organizational commitments, reduced costs and improved processes have become marginalized under the new CEO. We thought a new CEO would bring change that would benefit the entire organization and the staff is disappointed. Expect a lot of turnover in the coming months.

I love working at PLOS

Pros

No organization is perfect and from the reviews, it looks like the disgruntled employees have spoken. However, I truly believe that PLOS is a great place to work. PLOS has great benefits, 401(k) matching, fruit, snacks, coffee/tea/cocoa in the kitchen. Employees gather for drinks and snacks on Friday afternoons. The company offers an amazing Holiday Party and does a fun summer event.

Cons

As the organization grows, there are "growing pains" and there are some employees who are upset about necessary changes.

Pros

Workers start out enthusiastic about science and open access Decent benefits

Cons

Department managers would rather have public fights with other department managers or contractors that belong on a school ground than behave professionally. Management is either completely unavailable or micro-managing. Backstabbing by management is a constant. This behavior pits middle management and staff against each other. Even though you're officially on a "team", there is no teamwork, and most employees are out for themselves at the expense of others. If you have allies senior to you, you can literally get away with anything. If you have no allies or step out of line, you may as well start looking for another job. Pay is about 20k less than average for the same position at another company, unless you're in upper management or an executive, in which case you're making six figures. Pathetic raises; you work long hard hours to be able to go out to a modest dinner once more per pay period, if you receive the maximum raise.
