Not a tech company

Pros

Free lunch (Free breakfast if you come before 8:30, free dinner if you stay after 7) Nice office

Cons

First of all, Rakuten is not a IT company. It is not Google, Facebook, Amazon. Other IT companies allow you to spend working hours to do innovation. Rakuten asks you to spend your personal time to do innovation which benefits Rakuten, e.g. preparing Rakuten Hackathon. It's their management style. They like to work overtime and sleep in meetings. They track your working hour at the door gate and you will be asked why leaving early (e.g. 6). There is no open source project from Rakuten and they don't even contribute money to open source even they like those "free" software very much. They just think it's free why they need to give money. They don't respect technology from their heart. Other Japanese companies (e.g. Uniqlo, Mercari) have flexible working hours. In Rakuten, our CEO said we should work as "One" unit, so everybody needs to come at the same time. However, they also try to double the number of people in India. There is 3.5 hour timezone difference, so you can't work with Indian teams as "One" unit. You always need to stay overtime to work with them. Their policies always contradict with each other. Salary is low that even manager gets less than developer in other Japanese companies. They have a 4-year plan to catch up (just catch up, not take over) with other companies. Turnover rate is high, especially senior developers who have experience to judge what good company is.

Learn Japanese and work elsewhere

Pros

English-ish environment. IT is mostly English but lots of important functions like HR are mostly Japanese. They are trying to create a silicon valley spirit in Tokyo. Free food but you quickly get tired of the same menu/rotation. I put 5 stars at work/life balance because I could literally do my daily tasks in less than 1 or 2 hours. It's a great place if you have no ambitions. You can get promoted even if you do a mediocre job (although raise is virtually non-existent). If you are a foreigner, there is no expectation/pressure to do overtime. Company is somewhat LGBT friendly.

Cons

I honestly believe that management has no idea what's going on. This is a boat sailing without a captain and without a destination. There is no real innovation although the president invented the word "Innoperation" (from Innovative and Operations) to describe the company. I'm not sure if the company is doing "Innoperation" but it's clearly inoperative. Salary is lower than most places (I call this the "non-native speaking tax" so I guess it's understandable to some extend). Your starting salary will remain almost the same even if you do well. There's the official HR evaluation system and then there's the "informal system". There's "church" to attend on Monday mornings where the CEO talks pretty much non sense about his vision (or lack of). He tries to dodge questions that he's made aware of in advance (I participated, your questions are pre-screened and it's all smoke and mirrors). Don't expect help from managers. They "manage" (whatever that means) and spend their days in meetings. The turn over is crazy high. You might end up being the senior in your team with practically no knowledge on how to do/fix things. Although the company claims to be diversified, there is clearly a wall between locals and foreigners. It may or may not be ok for some people.

Pros

*free breakfast and lunch (but not the best quality) *clean working environment *great task chairs and standing desks *health benefits are good

Cons

*meeting happy, wasting times in meetings that aren't necessary *attending All Hands via web cast in Japan but can't relate to anything as it does not pertain to the business functions in the US *trying to make San Mateo the US HQ but failing. Should have stayed in SF and grew HQ there *false promises for career growth *clicky - very high school 'mean girls' culture in the Leadership and Executive team, very unprofessional *false promises of building an onsite gym and sushi bar *terrible commute, nothing is near the office *make you feel guilty for taking any time off *terrible time off around the holidays *certain acquisitions are treated better than others, favoritism by the CEO among employees *hiring high level executives that are under qualified or under false pretenses and then they leave *forcing a Japanese culture where it doesn't work *promotions come to only those that brown nose *VERY high turnover rate and no follow up on the for employee feedback that is constantly asked for If the Chief HR Officer hired from Groupon can't stay at least 6 months, then you know something is wrong.
