Pros

- You can get a visa for Japan - Lunch is included (breakfast and dinner only if you work overtime, and cafeteria is always overcrowded)

Cons

- Utter lack of executive leadership; the founder has vague visions of grandeur (mostly parrotted from elsewhere, though) but there is no actual direction or strategy - Engineering culture that resist change at all costs; no accountability for system failures, no serious post-mortem analysis and improvements; security is best effort - Organic, spontaneuos collaboration between teams is not encouraged; duplication of effort ("reinventing the wheel") is rampant - No remote work or flexible time options are provided (except in health-related circumstances), even though most of the time there is absolutely no need to be physically present in the office - No career development to speak of; HR lately has been saying they want to improve but it basically boils down to provide some training courses. In general HR is completely detached from the reality of the problems that employee witness. As a result turnover is very high, almost every day you get mail from people that are leaving the company (normally the ones that are for making improvements to the status quo; after clashing with the engineering culture they move on, leaving behind the ones that are OK with the status quo) - Most middle management is Japanese, breaking through the ceiling normally requires knowing Japanese even though all communication is supposed to be carried out in English - Office is overcrowded, all meeting rooms are always fully booked even though often they remain unused - Business outlook is not positive. Stock lost 50% of its value in the last year. - Salary is not competitive with many IT companies (both Japanese and foreign) in the area (often in the range of 15-30% less, but can be higher)

Pros

I've been working at Rakuten India for more than 3 years now and I absolutely love it. The people, culture, management, and work/life balance are all incredible! The company cares about its employees and goes above and beyond to create a positive work environment. Lots of room for advancement and growth within the company. Since this is a Japanese company, everything is based on trust factor. You get new projects from Japan based on trust, they interact with you based on trust. So, in order to build the trust, it takes time. For some employees, especially who doesn't care about cultural differences, this can be very frustrating and challenging. Even if there is an easy way to do things, you gotta follow the set procedure, but there is a reason for each procedure and once you understand it, you won't find any reason to complain. And once you're in their trust books, it's easy for you to interact with them and the Japanese will go to any extent to help you. You get to learn the real meaning of work ethics, principles etc if you really care to understand Japanese way of doing things. You need to have lot of patience. As every startups, there were initial hiccups, but now things have changed in Rakuten India and the company is on the ascendant: lots of growth, lots of cool new projects, tons of interesting work and opportunity.

Cons

If I have to say, there are few, but that's part of the fun, if you look at it the right way. So, I don't have anything bad to say about our growing company.
