Pretentious

Business Outlook

Pros

Good Perks! The potential for growth if you are good at making friends.

Cons

I find this place to be pretentious and toxic. Lots of politics and brown nosing to get anything done. This place also lacks diversity and there is no urgency to address this issue.

Thank you for your post, your feedback means a lot to me. I'm really sorry to hear you haven't had a positive experience with your time at Shopify so far. I hope my response will provide insight and give you some useful next steps. First, I'd encourage you to reach out to me directly or, if you're not comfortable, the HR representative for your team (you can find them in the Vault). All of these conversations will be confidential, but if you prefer to remain anonymous, please consider using the anonymous hotline (also available on the Vault). It's really important for us to hear all of your feedback — we can't make things better if we don't know where to direct our attention. As for building an inclusive team, I understand your frustration. It's something we focus on every day and recognize it's a work in progress. Shopify is continuing to make efforts through more diverse hiring practices, more representative benefits, and internal education like unconscious bias training. If you're interested in learning more — or providing your thoughts on how we could do better — please reach out to our inclusion team on Slack. I understand how important it is to connect with a company's culture, and while I can't speak directly to what you've experienced, I'd love to hear your feedback on how we can do better. Our culture places a large emphasis on trust and individual ownership and I feel we've done a good job at keeping politics out of Shopify's culture. That said, there's always room to improve. I'm sorry you're having trouble with your lead. We promote individuals into leadership positions who have shown they can make an impact leading their team technically and professionally. Our internal leadership training, Lead Level Up, is a great effort to help our leads grow. That said, direct feedback from their team is always the best option to make sure they are continuing to do better. Again, I would love the opportunity to speak with you about your concerns and I would really encourage you to reach out to your HR business partner or your lead in the future. Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback. - Kyle, Director of UX

Yeesh - I get the impression that you did not like working with Shopify! I do appreciate that you took the time to post a comment though as it does give me the opportunity to make a few brief points in response. Shopify is not for everyone - and that is OK. We work hard to always employ the right person in the right role. Whilst you may not have enjoyed the Guru role, there are many people for whom being a Shopify Guru is the perfect job. If you realize that Shopify is not for you, we would prefer to part on good terms than have you stay an employee and be unhappy with your career choice. It seems like your issue with Shopify was driven in part by a poor relationship with your squad lead. Please note that as an employer we do take bullying seriously and if your squad lead has a ‘vendetta’ against you there are actions that can be taken. I appreciate that this is of little help to you now, but please know that if anyone else is in your situation there is support they can access through their HR Business Partner. Lastly, I wanted to highlight that the figure you quoted refers to the fact that on Black Friday Cyber Monday 2017 Shopify processed over $1 Billion in sales for our merchants. It is worth noting that this figure was revenue generated by merchants who use the Shopify platform not Shopify itself... and what an amazing achievement to be able to facilitate a success of this magnitude for so many other businesses in one single day! Shopify is an employer who truly values our employees and one of the ways we demonstrate this is through offering competitive compensation packages which include a range of perks and benefits you receive throughout the year and which you may not find at other employers. I wish you all the best with your future endeavours.
