Senior management has taken a turn for the worse lately, ever since the comp project got announced. They have become a lot more authoritarian, locking down slack threads where feedback or constructive criticism have been given. They have also taken to firing people who give constructive criticism on slack and giving official warnings to those who react to such messages on Slack. Yes, you can receive a warning for reacting to a message on Slack. No I'm not joking.
This has created a stifling culture where people are too afraid to voice what they really think about the company. I think people generally enjoy the teams they work in, but everyone is scared of saying anything on Slack in case they get fired. Yes, this has happened, multiple times.
Compensation project started out as "everyone will make more money", now it is, "you're lucky you have a job". It's been delayed multiple times and no one really knows what is happening. Rumours are that the increases won't be that good. Which means Shopify will continue to pay just average by UK standards, poor by Canadian and American standards.
They used to make the results of the company's Pulse survey available internally - this year they hid it apparently because they didn't like the results.
Don't apply wait right now - there is a hiring freeze on which they won't acknowledge. I know several people who have applied, got to offer stage, and then left in limbo.
Stealth layoffs are occurring and they won't acknowledge them.
