Pros

Fantastic benefits; fun, casual work atmosphere; entry level salary is higher than at comparable firms. Flexible work hours, and strong sense of unity among editorial units.

Cons

Raises are hard to come by, and promotions are even more difficult. Instead of being promoted for doing good work, you have to hope the department head asks for a "new position" and then you can apply for it - against the other eight EAs in your division. Different departments (editorial, production, accounting) butt heads frequently.

Pros

The best reason to work at Springer was the opportunity to travel and interact with learned and interesting authors, editors, and colleagues around the world. I enjoyed learning about the content areas and developing a network among leaders in the field. Colleagues, at least in the Massachusetts offices, were great to work with, and maintained a family atmosphere.

Cons

The compensation was meager and the path to career development was extremely unclear. Performance had little impact on career advancement or salary decisions, and employees outside of the major European offices or New York had even fewer opportunities.
