Pros

Centrally located in Foster City

Cons

Years ago it used to be an fun place to work where teamwork and solving the business and/or technical problem was paramount. Visa also paid very well and had great benefits including a 4 to 1 ratio for matching funds in your personal 401k up to 3% of your salary - for every dollar you put toward the 401k, Visa matched it with $4. Now most of the financial advantages are gone, the retirement benefits have been significantly altered. There seem to be few reasons to be a part of the current version of Visa. Management is more concerned about budget and process than they are about the business objectives. Creativity is no longer encouraged.

Pros

Initially, the benefits were spectacular. When I started, Visa was a not a public company and they had to compete with stock compensation plans from other companies. They did this by boosting the benefits.

Cons

It is a marketing company. Brand and Technology fought all the time, but eventually, Brand won most of the battles. Technology was a cost center, not a valued resource. As a technologist, this Brand-centric view really impacts technological career growth - one must become a manager to succeed, especially now that off-shoring is very commonplace. The benefits eroded over time and while the salary was still pretty good, eventually, the total package paled in comparison to other employers.

Pros

- The global scope and breadth of the company. Transactions are much more complicated and interesting than you realize from the outside. There's a ton to learn and a lot of different areas you can focus on. - Good opportunities for intra-company job changes, both within the organization or to move to a remote region - The strength of the brand - In pockets, there are some great people and great teams to work with (some fairly mediocre and unmotivated ones in other areas) - Generally, pretty balanced hours and lifestyle, especially compared to a tech company or startup. A lot of people manage to do a standard 8-5 day.

Cons

- It's a weird place to work right now with the reorg to Visa Inc. - There are a lot of internal politics from the old, regionalized, somewhat divisive structure still being worked out, with different organizations coming out as winners or losers. - There have been a lot of layoffs and reshuffling over the past year or so, with more still going on, so morale isn't the greatest (though better than it was). - Benefits keep getting cut - 401k matching, pension - and the stock grants were laughably small - Management communication isn't the greatest. A lot of the changes take forever with radio silence in the meantime, leaving people wondering what the heck is going on. - Big company bureaucracy, which is just increasing. It can be difficult to do simple things like get a P.O. for software approved or to get an employee a cell phone. - There used to be great opportunities for advancement if your manager backed you. Now, they've releveled everyone to generic grades (e.g., Sr. Director through SVP are now "Senior Business Leads"), so it's going to be a lot harder to get promoted.
