Good benefits, bad leadership

Recommend
Business Outlook

Pros

The benefits are solid, which makes it difficult to leave. I get a lot of time off which I value, and don't have a hard time using it. Retirement + healthcare is adequate.

Cons

Leadership is terrible. They jump from one big idea to the next and leave the remains in shambles. Reorgs are constant. Long-term plans are made and abandoned months later in favor of short-term efforts to improve the quarterly earnings call. Messaging is completely tone-deaf and sunny while everyone hates working here. Every six months we do a survey on employee satisfaction, which is low, and the survey only upsets people more because leadership does not act (or acts directly counter to) the feedback that is given. They are pushing for increased RTO, despite everyone universally hating that and being very vocal about it, which suggests either total incompetence or they are trying to reduce headcount without actually doing a layoff. If you aren't in sales, no one cares what you are doing. Management is left totally impotent to address employee concerns. As a manager, I cannot believe anyone would accept what we offer as entry-level pay. It's laughably low, and they withheld raises this year. I am honestly shocked any time we are able to find someone willing to fill a vacancy on my team. That is, when we are even allowed to hire, because leadership constantly freezes hiring. I am actively looking to leave and I don't recommend that anyone try to take my role when I'm gone.

Pros

Nice people. Working remotely is nice.

Cons

Wiley used to be a great place to work, but has been rapidly going downhill for about 5 years plus, coinciding with the ousting of the most recent CEO. Next came mass layoffs of 200+ employees. In short, no one's job is safe, and the company is failing as evidenced by their tanking stock and continuous failing to reach their financial goals. On top of that, the company is being investigated for securities fraud, which no doubt plays a factor in their falling stock. Wiley continues to send American jobs overseas to India and the Philippines, hence the constant mass layoffs. As a result, Wiley is selling floors of their Hoboken office, and it's probably only a matter of time until that office shutters its doors. If you're into being woke, this is the company for you. Wiley is more concerned with saying they're inclusive than the well-being of their employees who are stagnant and have not voice. Wiley is especially NOT inclusive at the Executive Leadership Team level. "Racist" is a strong word, but it is open secret at Wiley that such a mindset exists among upper management. In addition, it is well known that Wiley exploits it's overseas vendors (poor working conditions, long hours, low pay, etc), while trying to sweep their transgressions under the rug. Wiley sweet talks its employees and assures them that the company is flourishing, but that's simply not true. A quick google search will show you how the company is in disarray. Unfortunately, Wiley is now the bottom of the barrel when it comes to scientific/educational publishing. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

Pros

Remote work is acceptable. Colleagues are supportive.

Cons

If you don't like Wiley today, wait a week, it might change. You might also lose your job. Management is completely out of touch. They are cutting costs and getting rid of people.
