The wonderful world of Wiley

Recommend
Business Outlook

Pros

Working at Wiley as a Sales Director has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The company fosters a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement, making it an ideal place for professional growth. The collaborative spirit at Wiley is one of my favorite things. I have had the pleasure of working closely with talented colleagues across Sales, Product, Marketing, and Engineering. Their expertise and dedication have been instrumental in achieving our sales targets and driving the company's and my own success.

Cons

The publishing industry is facing significant economic pressures felt across all teams at Wiley. For example, the shift towards open access and the rise of digital platforms has disrupted traditional publishing methods and created some uncertainty in the industry. Problems like these have led to tighter budgets and a need for increased focus on our organizational strategy and spending, which can sometimes limit resources for innovative projects.

Generally good

Pros

As most others have said, the majority of the people I work with are pleasant and competent. Trusted to 'get on with it' (manager dependent). A relatively honest environment - raising concerns is acceptable, though solutions (particularly where they require money) are not necessarily quick to follow. Some great benefits like Happy Fridays, Rec Days,

Cons

Bureaucracy around certain decision-making processes. Pay is generally on the low end. There's a lot of bloat in my area of the business that takes time away from our core responsibilities, making it harder to succeed. Whilst we're encouraged not to exceed our working hours and there's a lot of lip service paid to work/life balance, there are few tangible things done to address the root of the problem. Working arrangements have become less flexible for hybrid colleagues, though perhaps still more flexible than other publishers. Some key adjacent departments are underfunded, leading to stagnant practices and less capable candidates filling those roles, which in turn puts more pressure on my corner of the business. As with many publishers, there are a lot of outsourced roles which leads to lower quality communication and output vs when these roles were in-house.

Pros

Regularly gather feedback from colleagues about their experiences at Wiley and actively work on potential improvements. Celebrate Happy Fridays during the summer, and encourage colleagues to reserve Friday afternoons for focused work during the rest of the year. Support colleagues in achieving work-life balance by organizing various well-being sessions. Foster a supportive environment with minimal internal competition, where colleagues are generally very helpful. Prioritize colleagues' career and personal development, showing genuine care for their growth.

Cons

Frequent organizational changes can be disruptive. Decision-making and internal system developments lack efficiency. The workload is consistently intensive.
