Pros

Good exposure to international development issues, very smart people, a lot of learning events

Cons

Hierarchical, bureaucratic difficult to get exposure. Experience depends a lot on your team leader, if she/he is the bureaucratic type...good luck.

Pros

Incredible access and exposure to clients including governments and civil society organizations, and ability to work on wide range of issues if you are a generalist in a country office where there is a need for labor.

Cons

Unsure career path for locally recruited staff -- especially younger -- who enter as consultants and want to progress to full time 'staff'.
