I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Cengage
Interview
I interviewed for the Sales Implementation Manager role over three rounds between November and December. The first recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn, was responsive, and moved me through the process quickly. The early interviewers seemed organized and professional. However, after the final round in early December, communication stopped entirely.
I was told a decision would come after the holidays and that the start date would likely be around February. I followed up via email multiple times in late January and February with both the recruiter and the hiring manager. I received no response to any of those messages, including a direct outreach to the final round interviewer asking for a simple status update.
For a company of Cengage's size and reputation, this level of disregard is striking. There are multiple reviews on Glassdoor echoing the same experience, which suggests this is not an isolated incident but a pattern. If this is how they treat candidates who made it to the final round, it raises real questions about internal communication and how employees are treated once they're inside.
I came into this process with respect for the brand and left with serious doubts. Other candidates deserve to know what they may be walking into.
The recruiter was friendly and upfront, which I appreciated. That said, there was a significant gap between the job description and what was actually described on the call.
The posting leads heavily with customer outcomes, adoption, and relationship language, which reads as a traditional CS role. On the phone, the recruiter confirmed it is 80-90% revenue focused and that the second round would consist largely of revenue and sales questions. She mentioned the product name in case I wanted to familiarize myself beforehand, which given the revenue focus of the interview, tells you something about what they are really evaluating for.
The posted salary range of $67K-$87K was also narrowed to $75K-$80K on the call with no explanation for the discrepancy.
If you are a CS professional who specializes in post-sale engagement, onboarding, adoption, and customer outcomes, know going in that this role sits much closer to account executive or sales territory than traditional customer success. The title and job description do not reflect that accurately. Candidates deserve to know the distinction before investing time in the process.
The recruiter was kind and the process moved quickly. The transparency issue is with how the role is positioned, not with how I was treated.

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Cengage in Nov 2025
Interview
Had 4 interviews that I thought went well and then I was completely ghosted. I tried reaching out to the recruiter for updates and was ignored. Four months later I received a generic rejection email from a different recruiter.
