I applied online. I interviewed at Equinox (Detroit, MI) in Mar 2018
Interview
There was a three or four step process. A group introduction to the company followed by a quick meeting with a manager on the initial visit. One to two more additional interviews might come later if one is selected to move forward.
They spent far too much time in my estimation hyping the organization vs meeting and interviewing with the managers. Which gets to part of my issue as my final interview was to speak with the two training managers because the regional manager advanced me through to the second group interview.
I made it to the end but they claimed the other managers just wanted to meet with me in person! Understand that this process took over a month because they were staffing a club that had not been completed at that point.
There are many details I could add, but it boiled down to them admitting that I was over qualified and might be too influential on other trainers or staff! They were looking to hire 25-30 trainers and only about 20 made it to the second interview. I’m sure even less got hired.
So it seems odd that I would not be selected when I was clearly the most qualified! I don’t follow with the overqualified for several reasons. Ultimately, the atmosphere was cultish and proved to be a great waste of my time if not downright discriminatory.

Question 1
Again, my very brief meeting was with a regional manager and there are only three of those to my understanding. He was professional and the dynamic was more conversational than direct question based. He seemed to be more taken with my background and my choice to leave a lucrative sales career.
Which doesn’t make much sense as they went on about the earning potential and fulfillment of working for Equinox. I had been a level 5 trainer for Lifetime already and did well, so my background in sales had already proved to be an asset and clearly it was a career I was interested in continuing.
The second interview was in a group of us who made it past the initial meeting. It was broken down into several parts. There’s much that I could add on this, but they seemed to focus in on the my experience and leadership as threatening. The whole vibe changed in the room once much of the attention went to me, but the “group thing” was their idea…
Interview with training manager, take them out to the floor of gym and run through a few exercises. Show them you know how to warm someone up and take them thru a basic exercise
