I was proactively contacted by a Shopify recruiter for an SMB sales role. During our conversation, they told me I was a strong fit but that no roles were currently open. The very next day, an SMB role was posted. I followed up multiple times—only to be ignored. When I applied, I was auto-rejected. I applied again, reached out once more, and was auto-rejected again.
I understand that rejection is part of the job search, but what’s frustrating is the lack of basic professionalism. If a recruiter reaches out to you first, engages in a conversation, and expresses interest, the bare minimum they can do is provide an update when things change. Ghosting candidates—especially ones you sought out—is not just unprofessional, it’s demoralizing.
Job seekers put in a huge amount of effort, and when companies like Shopify treat candidates this way, it damages their employer brand. I had been excited about the possibility of working here, but this experience has made me question whether Shopify values people beyond just customers.
If you're a job seeker, be prepared for inconsistent communication. If you're a recruiter at Shopify, I hope this serves as a reminder that your interactions have real impacts on people’s lives.
Requires you to take a long assessment before you can even have an initial convo with a recruiter. Recruiter did not seem to care and seemed unprofessional and highly casual. They downplayed the role and even said the team may eliminate the position one day. There was no up sell or positivity on their part.

Question 1
Typical talk about your experience type of questions. There was a lack of interest on the recruiters part. I felt he didn’t even want to be there.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (New York, NY) in Jan 2023
Interview
The interview process is vague and subjective. Although the process moves quickly once you get to the life story interview that’s when things get a little bit shaky you don’t really get feedback on why you don’t make it to the next step and you can apply to multiple jobs and roles again have the same conversations but once they put you up for the life story, you don’t really hear anything after that. They lack feedback and don’t even have the common courtesy to send an actual email if you get an automated reply.
