I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON)
Interview
Step 1: Phone call with their recruitment staff.
I had a 10 - 15 minute phone call with one of their recruitment staff. We had a very pleasant, conversational chat about me, where I grew up, why I want to work there, etc.
Step 2: In person Interview
After, the 1st phone interview, she emailed me back to pull me in for an in person interview. Again, it was conversational and pleasant.
The thing that threw me off was that she asked the same questions that she asked me in the phone interview so I felt a little awkward essentially regurgitating what I had already said to her 2 days prior.
Step 3: Was turned down for the job.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Ottawa, ON) in Mar 2016
Interview
My interview experience with Shopify has been the most enjoyable interview experience I've ever had. I was very impressed with the recruiting team's organization and promptness in following up after each interview stage. I had an initial phone screen with a recruiter, then a Skype interview with the manager for the role, another Skype interview with a team mate for the role, and then in-person interviews in Ottawa.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Initial questions start with tell me about yourself, where did you grow up, lead me through your journey up to this point, etc.
As you move forward in the interview process, the questions do become more technical and directly related to the role you are interviewing for. No behavioural or situational questions (e.g. tell me about a time when...) but rather more analytical testing to understand your thought process and approach.
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Ottawa, ON) in Jun 2014
Interview
Very laid back interview process, but did seem drawn out and a bit mismanaged. Overall everyone was very nice and conducted the interview more as a conversation than an interrogation. That said, people obviously need to do their research and show passion for the company. Don't mistake a laid back interview style to a laid back approach to finding the right candidate.

Question 1
They asked questions like what was high school like. A novel approach and obviously very different.
