I went through three rounds over about two weeks. First was a brief recruiter screen about my background and interest in Shopify’s mission. The second was a panel interview with two product managers that focused on product strategy, collaboration, and user empathy. The final round involved cross-functional interviews with a design lead and an engineering lead, plus a conversation with a senior manager about leadership style and cultural fit. Each round had a healthy balance of open-ended product questions and discussion of past experiences delivering product outcomes.

Question 1
“How would you measure the success of a new feature for Shopify merchants, from both the merchant and Shopify perspectives?”
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Vancouver, BC) in Sep 2024
Interview
I was referred for a position at Shopify, which initiated my interview process. Communication with the recruiter started positively, and I proceeded to have two interviews that seemed to go well based on feedback received. Before the second interview, I was told I would receive an invite for another session called a "Life Story" interview. However, I never received that invite despite being assured it would be sent.
After two weeks of waiting, I received a rather ambiguous email stating that the requisition was under review and that, while my recent interview feedback was positive, no additional interviews would be scheduled at that time. I was encouraged to apply for other roles within Shopify.
I sought clarity through my referral contact, who followed up internally. Subsequently, I received an abrupt email on a Saturday morning, informing me that Shopify had decided to move forward with other candidates who were deemed a better match for the role.
Overall, my experience left me with mixed feelings. The initial stages and feedback were positive, but communication lapses and the unclear progression were frustrating. The final rejection email, sent unexpectedly over a weekend, seemed impersonal and abrupt, particularly after the time and energy invested.
