I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Montreal, QC) in Apr 2017
Interview
Applied online, got an email back 3 weeks later (I was actually surprised, I figured at that point the decision was already made since the position was removed from the careers page on the website) asking to give some options for a phone interview. During the interview it was a very relaxed atmosphere where I was asked mostly about my life in general, with the main focus being structured around why shopify, and what I do in my present career.
Unfortunately this time I did not get an offer, but I had a great experience, and definitely would encourage others to apply. Just be prepared to talk about yourself not in a generic "what are your strengths and weaknesses?" cookie-cutter interview kind of way.

Interview
I received a phone call from someone on the recruiting team to talk a bit about my experience and interest in Shopify. After about a 10 minute talk, he told me that he would be in contact to schedule an in-person interview.
After almost 2 weeks I received an email requesting an in person interview in their office with a recruiter. I went to that interview, which was the "Life Story" interview. This means the recruiter didn't know anything about me and never looked at my resume. She asked me about my personal background and why I made the major life decisions I did over the years.... very few actual work-related questions. At the end, she told me someone would be in contact soon.
After a couple followups, the recruiter contacted me to come in for another interview with a different recruiter. I went to that... same "Life Story" deal as the first. Actually, 90% of the questions were exactly the same. After about a 25 minute "conversation" the interview was over. After a couple more days I got a call saying they decided to go with someone with more experience.... not sure if she meant life experience or work experience, because we didn't touch on much work related stuff.
The only thing I can say about this experience is that Shopify has a very different hiring process than any other company. It seems to work for them, and that is great (for them). I feel that if other less-known companies made hiring decisions like this, they would go out of business.

Interview
Long...many interviews...but everything made sense and communication was excellent the whole way through. I had a number of one on ones with various members of the team...each spaced around a week apart.
