I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Oct 2021
Interview
I was referred by another Shopify employee. Talked with a team lead about what they were hiring for (informal chat) then talked with a recruiter then had a 45 min case question with a PM manager (not the hiring manager)
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
The question was very open ended. The email I got made it seem like it would be a root cause analysis question, so that's what I studied for, but it wasn't. It was a more standard product question specifically about shopify/ecommerce. E.g., 'you see feedback that users want x, what do you do?' - so diving into why they want it, the problem, what's the right solution, metrics, etc.
It will be VERY specific to shopify, as in a problem their users currently have. I was very out of my element as I don't have ecommerce experience. They say that they don't require ecomm experience but with a question like that, it was very difficult for me without that background.
They ghosted me after, which I was expecting based on other reviews - so not really surprised there.
I booked a timeslot for a mini case with a PM and my life story with HR. Easy to schedule with online calendar tool. Informative website about the hiring process.
The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Nov 2020
Interview
1. Life story interview which went well. Immediately offered to interview for next round which was a mini case study
2. Mini case study round went really great. Interviewer was really nice and asked some thoughtful questions. More of a collaboration like real world working environment. Expected to move to next round.
Post this, no decision or next steps shared - neither acceptance nor decline. Recruiter completely ghosted.
Till date no response after multiple follow ups.
Its a shame for company like shopify to treat candidates like this. We understand that internal re orgs / hiring freeze etc sometimes causes recruiting to be put on hold. Or sometimes you are not able to move forward. Least you can do is be transparent and give a response back. Truly disappointed- what a shame !
