Pros

ABB is a global company that promotes cross training and likes to promote from within. There are plenty of opportunities and the salary is competitive. Employees are vary valued and management cares about if you are happy or not.

Cons

Process improvement needed at least where I work. Management wants the team to drive improvement and change but I feel a lack of follow through to continue. HR and IT are overseas

Fresh new leadership but existing culture needs to change

Pros

Large international company with terrific career opportunities for upwardly mobile individuals and leaders This building has several US Utility Industry-recognized subject matter experts in high voltage transmission equipment New leadership has fresh ideas of how to turn around ABB's high voltage business challenges with quality and customer focus

Cons

The new leadership is refreshing but the rank-and-file white collar work force still has a predominantly "not my job, not my problem" attitude. There is a deeply embedded culture of willful helplessness, and a tolerance for mediocrity There is an alarming lack of digitalization of internal work processes, and a lack of automation for even the most basic workflow tasks. Productivity and quality suffers due to multiple manual processes and disconnected systems. This is very disappointing, considering ABB's market reputation for leading-edge technology.

Diminishing Opportunities?

Pros

I've been with ABB for almost 15 years. In general the company has been good to work for with fair compensation and benefits. As a global company there have been opportunities to collaborate with colleagues around the world. ABB has also taken a more strategic view of business. Not to discount the importance of monthly, quarterly and annual business objectives but ABB has tended toward a longer strategic horizon than some other companies I am familiar with. ABB has a culture of integrity, safety, quality and innovation -- all of which contribute to a positive place to work.

Cons

Over my time with ABB it seems that the United States, while nominally an important market is seeing increasing off-shoring of both manufacturing and managerial positions. Today, ABB announced that consideration of annual merit increases will be deferred until later -- perhaps at the end of Q2 (normally this is a March activity), but no firm statement that this is only a 3-4 month delay. At a time US unemployment is at a record low numbers and many companies -- particularly global entities -- are moving to repatriate jobs and give both bonuses and significant pay raises, ABB decides to NOT take care of its loyal employees. Instead they spend $2.6 billion to buy a failing division (GE Industrial) from a competitor that knew it's days were numbered.
