Pros

Been with Amex for over 14 years and I've seen the pros go down, to probably now the lowest points I can mention. Benefits are good except medical, that high deductible plan with HSA, is expensive. Most of the time you will pay out of pocket except if there is a high cost medical procedure or incident. I believe this is where many corporations are headed though. Their severance plan is very good if you are a long time employee. You want to make note of this because the chances of getting laid off are very high. They lay off every year - its common practice - again probably on line with most corporations though. Nothing unique to AMEX.

Cons

Very antiquated Performance Management review. This is probably the core of their problems. It causes lies, deceit, cheating, back stabbing - only promotes individualism and keeps the 'team' spirit down. Be prepared because this is a cancer that is killing the company. It almost killed Microsoft - they got rid of a similar review program. This is why many of the leaders don't really deserve the positions they received - because its all about marketing yourself at the expense of all else. Too many Indians. They lost the way of diversity. I can tell you there are thousands of jobs that could easily go to Americans - especially those out of college. Instead, they recruit the H1B, bring them to the U.S. and many, many of them get converted to employees - at the expense of releasing Americans of their jobs - here in the U.S.

Pros

Relative to its peers, especially in NYC, Amex work culture is less intense while still challenging and, in most cases, rewarding. Some of the smartest and most talented individuals work here. There is a strong focus on ethics and compliance, but at its core, the company truly does look after its customers' best interest (which cannot be said of other banks), and this of course is exemplified by its much-vaunted customer service, as any cardmember can attest to.

Cons

Innovation can be slow sometimes, although for an ancient company, it's doing a decent job at staying relevant. As a whole, it is risk-averse and more of a fast follower than an early adopter, so to speak. Compensation is at par with, or only slightly better than, industry average, which means that in super-competitive NYC, yes, you will get paid more working for a competitor (although one has to keep the work/balance thing in mind).

Pros

Remote position. Great local management. Lots of resources to get what you need done, even being remote. Lots of upside for $ and career growth if you work hard and make the right connections internally. Positive, good and (some) smart people whom you can learn a lot from. Excellent work-life balance. Good benefits. The company takes care of you. Great brand to represent and to have on your resume. Brand makes accessing customers and targets simple. All local reps in your market from other companies will want to work with you and "leverage" the power of the Amex brand, so makes networking easy.

Cons

Lagging a bit in technology and in the payments industry. Typical, large company mentality....slow moving, almost 60K employees so to be expected. Being successful at Amex is all about putting yourself out there - getting your results and yourself noticed so you can build your own brand internally (not really a con, just good to know what you're getting into).
