Lost its way

Pros

Amex has a good employee culture overall and can be a great school at the onset of one's career. Because of its size there are a lot of opportunities to do new things, acquire new skills, work abroad and build an exciting career. For those of us who spent most of our adult life there is was our second home and family. And in many ways Amex encouraged strong team spirit and inspired loyalty. Also it still has a good product and brand which make employees feel proud to work there and create opportunities to get good jobs after they leave.

Cons

Unfortunately in the past few years Amex lost its way. On one hand it hasn't been able to innovate enough and stay current while the market pressures are making it very difficult to maintain its current position. On the other, the formerly great employee culture has eroded in several areas turning to extremely competitive, over-pressuring and unforgiving. Moreover Amex is the classic example of promoting undeserving people simply for managing up well. Networking and presenting well is a lot more important than actually doing good work.

Pros

All the time I was there, the chance for advancement was there for the taking. You just had to take the initiative to inquire and do whatever it took to make it happen, even if it was a year later. The benefits and 401 k were amazing. I had so many wonderful managers and senior leader's. I learned so much and met so many amazing people. I met a few dear people that I have been friends with for almost 20 years so I am grateful I was able to start my career there.

Cons

Once I became a band 30, an analyst, no more leave right at 8 hrs and not worry about work. Sometimes worked 50-55 hours a week. Working at home at night and on weekends. When we had product launches, sometimes had to go into the office at midnight and stay until the wee hours of the morning or be on calls all night. It was exhausting but it was your job and expected of you.

Pros

Challenging and interesting problems. Large majority of people are collaborative team players. Smart peers. Career moves through different groups are encouraged. Strength of brand and reputation. Company is self-aware on attention to people/talent/work-life balance - questionable on whether awareness has driven change.

Cons

Extremely consensus-driven & matrixed. Lots of churn for little forward motion. For a company based on information (underwriting, consumer/merchant demographics, transaction information, etc.), data is extremely hard to access and users have low levels of fluency. Probably still overstaffed by 20%.
