Pros

Mostly good people working for the company (band 35 and below) Decent pay Superior brand

Cons

Leaders (Band 40 and above) tend to be duplicitous, cruel and only concerned about a narrow scope of interest; Employee development is given lots of lip service and not many real results resulting in a company where advancement from the ranks is nearly impossible; Overly complex matrix organization structure that gets in the way of real innovation; For a Fortune 100 company they tend to be skinflints with regard to travel, expense reimbursement, etc.

Pros

Well educated colleagues from top schools Good work / life balance, 2 days from home / 3 days at work is very common. Good health care coverage, retirement plan and overall benefits NYC - free museums, parks , zoo for the family - worth at least $1,000 a year. Social / Volunteer activities for those that are interested

Cons

Work gets done by who you know and how strong your internal network is - not exactly meritocratic. 80% time spent just trying to convince others that it's the right thing to do , 20% time actually spend doing it. Do not expect to do something earth shattering or extremely dynamic - Amex does do cool stuff but it pails compared to the number of employees it has employed and unless you get into the right group you might not get the opportunity. If you come from a startup you will do in 8 months what it might take 2 months to do in a startup. I would recommend that you evaluate the Job role and prospect of the group you are potentially getting hiring into much more than American Express as a whole. What applies to one team in the company might not apply to another it varies widely. I wouldn't turn down a good offer in a group that has good prospects and is doing some really interesting stuff.
