Pros

Flexibility. If you need to go to a doctor's appointment or leave early on a Friday, it's not big deal.

Cons

It is a huge company, and you know it. There are meetings to align on how to align. Also, Amex hires really smart and talented people, but I do not think they make the most use of the talent. The biggest challenge I've faced is figuring out how to get something done, which is more about navigating the organization as opposed to thinking through tough problems. Lastly, it takes forever to get anything done.

Pros

The people are great, at all levels. If you have a good idea then it will get picked up and used (or at least thought about). The hierarchical nature of the company is mainly around the structure for reporting. If you need to gain approval of a senior member of staff, or just want a chat, then they tend to have open doors.

Cons

It's a big company, so there can be quite a bit of bureaucracy. We are global, so there can be a lot of work outside of "normal" hours.

Pros

Work life balance is the number one reason to work at Amex. Secondly its a great place to start your career, its a great training ground full of free resources and information for learning critical business skills.

Cons

You have to play the game. Everybody talks fluff and you have to play along. People do not like constructive confrontation or debate of any sort. Things take forever to get completed - so much red tape. Getting promoted can be hard. You must have a solid network of people that will vouch for you. Its all about who you know.
